Mindfulness practices are great skills to use to help us get into the present and drop an anchor to ground ourselves. Often when we are thinking/worrying about the past we get stuck in depression, and worrying about the future can get us stuck in anxiety. But our minds naturally do that.
When you get stuck in your thoughts and they feel like they are racing, try “NOTICING THE SPACE BETWEEN YOUR THOUGHTS.” You might think your thoughts all flow together, but there is actually space in between, like the space on film reels between the pictures. Close your eyes for just one minute and focus on the space between your thoughts…. see what happens and what that is like.
This is a great skill to use if you start feeling your mind racing and feel like you need to do more but are not sure what do to. When that is happening we think we need to speed up, but what we really need to do is slow down. Slow Down to Go Fast. You can try this skill to help yourself slow down, then step back and approach whatever issue you are dealing with in a different perspective. It won’t make the problem or feelings go away, that is not the goal, instead it can help you ground yourself and not get so stuck in trying to fix your feelings and thoughts, but instead being more curious and open to them.
