Take your hands and put them together palms facing you like a book. Now raise them to your face and cover your face and eyes. Try looking through the slits between your fingers and see what that is like. Notice how your view has changed.
Imagine going the entire day with your hands over your face like this. How would this impact your ability to function? To relate and talk to people? To make choices? Would this impede your ability to function at your fullest?
We can often get blinded by our thoughts and they can cover our ability to see. When we get overwhelmed, hooked on, or buy into our thoughts we can have a hard time seeing what is around use (being in the present) and our ability to act effectively is severely reduced.
Now do the same things (bring your hands to your face) then slowly lower them until they are resting on your lap or in front of you. Now look around. Notice the difference? As you lowered your hands, your hands didn’t disappear or change, but your relationship to them did. By getting some separation from your thoughts, you can see the world more fully and flexibly and your are more free to choose to act in ways that are important to you rather than strain to make your way through the world.
