This is a skill you can use to get unhooked from difficult thoughts, especially that self criticism. Have you ever listened to talk radio? They are always going on and on, filling up air time, making big deals out of issues (some issues that are not that big to begin with). Well our mind is kind of like talk radio. Especially the inner critic. It always has something to say about what we are doing wrong. Start thinking about that critical part of you as “Doom and Gloom Radio”. It is going to be broadcasting all your past mistakes and mess ups in the morning, the afternoon is going to bring in special guest to talk about all the ways you are going to mess up in the future, and the evening is going to be a recap of how many mistakes you made that day. Imagine that radio announcer voice saying “This is KWTF coming at you live with all of your screw ups!” Well what can you do with talk radio? You can focus on it and argue in your car with these voices coming out of your speakers, or you can just leave it on in the background and go about your day, drive to and from, maybe listen here and there, but also realize that these radio jockeys are doing their job to fill time and make up issues.” Play around with this and if you find yourself getting really hard on yourself just say “There I go again listening to Doom and Gloom Radio.” If you want to find out more about my approach the therapy please visit my website www.peterbinnings.com.
